Dear Friends of LifeTree,

The following two bills in the North Carolina General Assembly need your immediate support.

ITEM #1 S145 - Ban on Assisted Suicide

S145 has been rewritten patterned after the straightforward Michigan law, which was enacted to stop Jack Kevorkian. This latest draft can be viewed on our web site at www.lifetree.org/S145-CSRC-76.html. LIFETREE FULLY SUPPORTS THIS VERSION.

Please contact the bill’s primary sponsor, Sen. Forrester Jamesf@ncleg.net, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary II Committee, Sen. Hartsell Fletcherh@ncleg.net, and the other members of that committee to express your support for this new version of S145 based on the Michigan law. (The main switchboard number is 919-733-4111.) Please tell them that you strongly support the bill and will appreciate their efforts to move the legislation through the Senate and to resist any efforts that may be made to weaken it.

Also, please contact your own State senator and tell him or her the same thing.

ITEM #2 H998 - Woman’s Right to Know/Abortion

This bill will empower desperate women with the information they need about health consequences and abortion alternatives, and prevent thousands of needless abortions every year. However, Rep. Culpepper has not scheduled this bill for consideration in the House Rules Committee. Majorities of both the Rules Committee and the whole House have signed on as co-sponsors, but there is very little time remaining in this session.

Please contact Rep. Culpepper Billc@ncleg.net and ask him to hear H998 in committee.  Also, please contact the two co-speakers of the house, Republican Rep. Morgan Richardm@ncleg.net and Democrat Rep. Black Jimb@ncleg.net and ask them to use their influence to get the bill a hearing. (The main switchboard number is 919-733-4111.) They appointed Rep. Culpepper to the Rules Committee chairmanship and assigned this bill to his committee. If this bill dies for lack of a hearing, they will share the blame with Rep. Culpepper.

Also, please contact your own State representative, and ask him or her to do everything possible to see that this bill gets heard.

If you have any questions, do not hesitate to call me at 919-785-0855.

May God bless you all, and thank you for your help.
